Director’s Note

I never wanted to direct Mamma Mia! It’s no secret that it’s my wife’s favorite musical, but I was never a big fan. I always saw it as nothing more than a lighthearted jukebox musical, with catchy ABBA songs and a quirky premise. But as I immersed myself in the project, I discovered that beneath the glitter and humor lies a story rich with heart, humanity, and emotional truth.
I learned that, at its core, Mamma Mia! is a story about identity-both discovering it, as Sophie does, and rediscovering it, as Donna must. Sophie begins her journey believing that she needs to know who her father is to understand herself. By the end, she realizes that identity isn’t determined by biology, but by the choices we make, and the life we choose to create for ourselves.
In many ways, though, this is really Donna’s story. As a young woman, she saw herself as a free-spirited dreamer; bold and independent, eager to live life on her own terms. After becoming a mother, Donna’s identity became entirely wrapped up in raising Sophie. As Sophie prepares to leave, she feels adrift. But Donna’s life and self-image cannot be so simply summed up. Donna associates her youthful freedom with pain and humiliation. When her past resurfaces, she’s forced to confront who she was, who she is, and who she wants to be. What she ultimately finds is not shame, but strength.
This story doesn’t glorify the past, it honors the growth that follows it. Donna isn’t celebrated for her mistakes; she’s recognized for her resilience. Mamma Mia! reminds us that people are complex, and that love and forgiveness-especially toward ourselves-can be transformative.
Being part of bringing this production to life has been a marvelous experience. I hope you find as much joy in watching it as we’ve found in bringing it to life.

Story

The Story of Mamma Mia!

On a sunny Greek island, Sophie Sheridan prepares to marry her fiancé, Sky, and secretly invites three men from her mother’s past–Sam, Bill, and Harry–believing one of them to be the father she’s never known. Her mother, Donna, runs a small taverna on the island. Donna has invited her old friends, Rosie and Tanya, to the island for her daughter’s wedding. The three of them were performers when they were younger and she is very excited to see them. Donna is stunned, however, when the three unexpected guests arrive.
ABBA’s unforgettable music weaves through the production, giving it both pulse and form. As chaos and comedy unfold in equal measure, old memories resurface, while past loves and long-buried regrets demand attention. Sophie’s search for her father becomes a journey of self-discovery, while Donna must confront who she was in deciding how she will decide who to become. By the end, Sophie realizes she doesn’t need to know her father to know herself, and Donna not only rediscovers joy and freedom, but a deeper peace that comes from self-acceptance and forgiveness. Mamma Mia! ultimately celebrates love, resilience, and the courage to embrace life’s messy, beautiful imperfections.
